Network Processors

Network Processors can provide carrier-class service provisioning to a multi-port ethernet switch. Solutions for both fast ethernet and gigabit ethernet switches are possible, both with higher speed uplinks.  To obtain the right cost to performance trade-offs, comparisons need to be made against the solution cost, complexity, availability, performance and power.

CES Clock Recovery

The increased demand for data services is forcing telecommunication operators to upgrade their networks to meet the higher bandwidth requirements.  LAN ethernet technology offers bandwidth for a fraction of the price of telecommunications equipment, and the telecommunication operators are starting to replace the existing networks with ethernet to benefit from the lower Capital Expenditure (CapEx) and Operational Expenditure (OpEx) costs.  The primary disadvantage is that the synchronous network that allows error-free communication between any end-station on the same network, is no longer available from a Metro Ethernet Packet Switched Network (PSN). Clock distribution is a major challenge that has yet be satisfactorily resolved.

Converged Switch

The transition to Metro Ethernet PSN has started. Any location with TDM-based equipment will need a converged switch with both TDM and Ethernet interfaces to enable connectivity into the Metro Ethernet PSN. This includes business customers and multi-tenant residential buildings, as well as the mobile operators interested in backhaul. The key difference between the different applications is the quality of the recovered clock. Network synchronisation is required regardless, and a key challenge today is in reducing the cost of the synchronisation.
